It Is Time for All Wounds to be Healed and Look to the Future: SC on Kashmir Issue

The Supreme Court on Wednesday expressed hope in the future of Kashmir while addressing the issue surrounding the abrogation of Article 370 in the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir. August 5th marks one year since the Government of India revoked the special status or limited autonomy, granted under Article 370 of the Indian Constitution to Jammu & Kashmir.
The Court expressed the same while hearing the case regarding the detention of Mian Abdul Qayoom, which was challenged on the ground of it being upheld by the Jammu & Kashmir High Court. The Bench which comprised of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Ajay Rastogi and Aniruddha Bose stated that, “Hope is something which creates the future and we are hopeful.”
The Apex Court noted that, “before we part with the matter, we must say that Kashmir has been a troubled area. Nature has been very kind to the place. It is the human race which has been unkind. It is time for all the wounds to be healed and look to the future within the domain of our country.”
Qayoom had been detained since the 5th of August, 2019 following the abrogation of the special status granted to Jammu & Kashmir under Article 370 of the Constitution. He is currently lodged in Tihar Jail. Qayoom’s nonconformist ideology was cited as the ground for upholding his detention by the Solicitor General on the 15th of July, when the plea first came up for hearing. The Solicitor General had informed the court on Monday that his detention which expires on August 7th, will not be extended further.
The Court in the case titled as Mian Abdul Qayoom v. Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir & Ors., also expressed hope that the Government will consider how to restore normalcy in Kashmir at the earliest.
